The story
Waldgut Hotel is a hospitality development for Berco Beheer BV set into a sloping, mountainous site in Klingethal, Germany. Across five levels — basement, two upper floors, ground floor and a further two floors — interconnected building volumes with multiple pitched roofs step down the terrain, covering roughly 1,500 sqm of built area on a 3,000 sqm site.
Brown timber detailing combines with yellow-painted and yellow masonry surfaces across the façade, beneath an extensive pitched-roof composition that includes a green roof. Guest rooms with en-suite bathrooms sit alongside a restaurant, a party and function hall, and a swimming pool, with balconies and terraces linking the accommodation and hospitality spaces to the surrounding landscape.
Originally built in 2023 and renovated in 2025 with 400 solar panels added across the roof planes, the project integrates accommodation, hospitality and recreation within a single, terrain-responsive building — its basement and cellar levels built directly into the slope.
